Application

The ST699 is an electronic central heating time control programmer that can be used on gravity primary, or fully pumped systems having separate heating and hot water temperature control. The programming sequence for the ST699 is straightforward, using the top slider switch and [+] and ['] buttons.

Installation

ST699 can be either surface or flush switch box mounted, for both of which fixing screws are supplied. The wiring sub-base has holes to suit single switch boxes and breakouts for surface and channelled wiring. When wiring is completed the removeable plug-in module is clipped into the sub-base. It can be removed if required by depressing the locking catch with a screwdriver. If the ST699 is used to provide time control for a gravity hot water/pumped heating system without separate temperature control, it is not possible to select Heating only without Hot Water. For these installations a HEATING and HOT WATER sticker is supplied which should be placed over the existing HEATING caption.

Question

Hello - I own a house in Cornwall which is centrally heated and which had a Honeywell programmer to control the use of the heating. The programmer in question was in the house when bought it 14 years ago. A few years ago the Programmer went wrong and a new ST699B Programmer was fitted by the Oil Company. Due to only being at the premises occasionally it has taken us some time to discover that the heating comes on at regular intervals even though the temperature of the house is higher than the setting and in addition the water heating element is in the off position. We have been in touch with the Oil Company who say that they chose the ST699B to replace the faulty time clock because it was the nearest equivalent item for the SMC time clock which was obsolete due to the changed building regulations. Can you help us resolve the problem?

Answer

Thank you for your enquiry - Unfortunately the older SMC Timeclock was indeed
made obsolete some years ago and it had an unusual operation which was controlled
by a relay within the timer which is not replicated within any more modern time switches.
This was generally used with a 3 port controller pumps which functioned in a similar way
to the more modern 3 way motorised valves. Because the controls within older domestic
heating systems can be complex particularly when they have been altered over the years
it may be more practical and cost effective to arrange for a local company in Cornwall
to visit your home so that they will be able to see the full control set up with a view
to updating to a more modern and cost effective control system.
